The Marks of a Disciple: A Disciple Abides in the Word

John 8:31 *So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,*

INTRO: What is discipleship?
Teachers/rabbis would take young men whom they thought had the aptitude to understand and further their message. When these men would become their disciple, they would then live life together. Eating, praying, learning, teaching, everything.

The main idea was that the young men would learn by observing how their mentor lived their life and interacted with their family, as well as how they worshiped and lived for the lord.
THE MARKS OF THE DISCIPLE

* Groups

*Eli and Sammuel*
Eli was the prophet in Israel at the time of Samuel’s birth. After he was born his mother Hannah dedicated him to the temple because the Lord had blessed her with a son in her barrenness.
1 Samuel 3:1 The boy Samuel ministered before the Lord under Eli. In those days the word of the Lord was rare; there were not many visions.

* Samuel grew up in the temple being mentored by Eli until the day that Eli died, after his death Samuel then succeeded him and became Israel’s prophet.
* But again, we see the mentorship taking place through living daily together, eating together, teaching, praying, etc.

John 8:31
Abide - Accept or act in accordance with.

* A disciple feeds on the word (3X a day)
* Imagine walking through place and finding a feast!
* (Jeremiah 15:16)“*Your words were found and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart. For I am called by your name, O Lord God of hosts*.”

* Buy food but don't eat it
* How do you know if you feed on the word? It's what comes out of you.

* _*A believer learns the word a disciple learns obedience by staying in the word.* _

John 8:32 * and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”*
